Federations in MS SQL Azure are a way to achieve greater scalability and performance from the database tier of your application through horizontal partitioning. One or more tables within a database are split by row and portioned across multiple databases (Federation members).

Federations in Windows Azure SQL Database are a way to achieve greater scalability and performance from the database tier of your application through horizontal partitioning. One or more tables within a database are split by row and portioned across multiple databases (Federation members).
This type of horizontal partitioning is often referred to as sharding.

As Tirasa, we have started an integration module between Windows Azure SQL Database and Apache OpenJPA, hosted at github and released under terms of Apache License 2.0.

The first public release was made available today: read release notes for details.

There is also a sample web application available to start playing with this new library.
